LG Blu-ray player goes through Wi-Fi Direct certification

Less than a week ago, LG's BD690 Blu-ray disc player appeared on the certification list of products compatible with the Wi-Fi Direct standard. Thanks to the feature, the BD690 will be capable of connecting to other Wi-Fi devices such as cell phones, notebooks and computers without requiring a network or router, making a multimedia streaming box redundant. While no detailed specs are known about the Blu-ray player, it will likely support direct streaming media from their phones or computers.

Wi-Fi Direct only requires one device to support the standard in order to make the connection. Wi-Fi specs apply, such as the maximum distance of about 300 feet and the ability to transfer data at the peak speed of the fastest of the two devices. The connection is protected thanks to an automatically generated WPA2 encrypted link.
